Little Blog’s big sister, Sunshine, is explaining what happened when the fish were released. She tells Little Blog that, when Eager was set free, he briefly turned back to look up at her.

“He was saying goodbye and thank you, Little Blog.”

“I think you’re a good mom, Sunshine. I don’t think his mom will be cross with you.”

“Thank you, Little Blog. And you know what?”

“What, Sunshine?”

Little Blog goes fishing (Part 3: Born free) July 19, 2007

On a cloudy day and a wind-swept beach, Little Blog and Sunshine go back to the rock pool to set free their new pets. Dad tells them the story of the lions in the movie Born Free, and sings the first lines from the theme song.

As Sunshine tips the pail into the water, four of the little creatures zip away and disappear under the rocks. The girls burst into song: “Born free! Free as the wind blows!”

Then they realise two of the little creatures aren’t moving.

“Oh no, they died!” shouts Little Blog. “We’ll have to bury them!”

“You don’t bury fish, Litle Blog,” Sunshine gently corrects her. “You just put up stones for them.”

Sunshine and Little Blog quickly find two smooth stones on the beach, and drop it into the water. Dad refuses to say a prayer for the dead.

Little Blog and her big sister, Sunshine, have caught half a dozen tiny fish.

Correction: Little Blog’s sister, and her Mom and Dad, on behalf of Little Blog, have caught half a dozen tiny fish. Some are little more than insects, but shaped like fish, so they have been declared honorary fish, and Little Blog and Sunshine are their honorary parents.

Little Blog’s Mom has been declared officially cool, after being bitten by a crab AND catching two fish for her. Little Blog gazes at her in open adoration.

“I love fishing!” declares Little Blog.

“What are you going to call them?” asks Mom.

Little Blog goes fishing (Part 1: The How-to) July 19, 2007

Little Blog has figured out how to go fishing, from watching her big sister, Sunshine.

“First, you put sand in the bottom of a bucket. Then, you fill the bucket with sea water. Then, you put shells on the sand.”

“Why do you have to put shells on the sand, Little Blog?” Dad asks.

“Because the fish lie on the shells to rest. And if they only have got one shell, then they get bored.”

“And how do you get them into the bucket, Little Blog?”

“You ask your daddy to catch them for you. Will you please catch a fish for me, Daddy?”

Little Bog and her big sister, Sunshine, are wading in a rock pool, trying to catch fish. This is proving rather difficult, since there aren’t any fish in the rock pool. However, numerous little sea creatures masquerading as tiny baby fish are enough to keep them happy. Sunshine even has a small net. Little Blog has the power of words.

“Daddy, you have to be careful of fishes that sting your feet,” she instructs her dad. “They are called stinging fish.”

“Is that right, Little Blog? Thank you for warning me. What other fish must I be careful of?”

“There are also sharks, they are really called biting fish.”

As a wave washes gently over a miniature dune of sea sand between the rocks, something small scurries out of an old shell that is left exposed.

“And what was that, Little Blog?”

“It’s a shelly fish.”

Just then Dad stops Little Blog from stepping on a ring-pull tab from a can.

“And what is that, Little Blog?”

“Can’t you see, Dad? It’s a Coca-Cola fish.”

Little Blog’s big sister, Sunshine, has discovered the Beatles, and is feeling very adult about it. And she is making a point of practising the more obscure lyrics, the better to impress Little Blog.

“I am here as you are here as we are all together,” she is singing as she dances around the holiday apartment. “I am the eggman, I am the eggman, I am the walrus. Coo coo choo, coo coo coo choo. Sitting on a cornflake waiting for the end to come…”

Little Blog is thoroughly unimpressed. It’s her job to go on and on about nothing at all.

She interrupts Sunshine: “I’ve got two favourite adult songs.”

”What are they called?” Sunshine demands.

Little Blog, creator of worlds July 14, 2007

Today Little Blog and her big sister, Sunshine, built entire planets. However, they don’t intend going into competition with any other creators of planets, since the only accessory they were able to include was a snake, lovingly crafted by Little Blog.

“Today me and Sunshine made snakes and planets,” explains Little Blog, as Sunshine hops about, desperate to give her version. No such luck when little Blog gets going: “My planet was Earth. It is a real planet and I made it from two paper plates and I coloured it in. The snake I also coloured in and I cut the paper off it so that I had a snake shape. That means planet Earth also has a snake and I made it.”

As she pauses for breath, Sunshine leaps in:

We can see a string of ships out at sea, heading for the harbour, and Little Blog is getting worried about pirates again.

“Mommy, are there pirates where we are staying?”

“What gives you that idea, Little Blog?”

“I think there are pirates and there are baddies, because I’ve heard of them, but I never saw one.”

“I’m very pleased you’ve never seen one, Little Blog. It’s not the kind of person you ever want to see.”

“But Mommy, what if I bump into one?”

“Where will you bump into one, Little Blog?”

“Maybe at the shops.”

“The shops?”

Little Blog, the human calculator July 12, 2007

Little Blog has become a calculating little demon. She has been given a toy calculator that really works. It is all in pink and plastic, but it has the basic functions, like add, subtract, multiply and divide. Little Blog is enthusiastically calculating everything she can think of.

She’s having tremendous fun, adding 2 and 2, and 4 and 3, 8 and 7, and ever more adventurous numbers. But even a calculator cannot keep Little Blog quiet. She provides an expert opinion on every digit that appears. And then she delivers her inevitable assessment:

“Mommy, how does a calculator work, because to work out the numbers, a person’s brain must have worked it out first when they made the calculator, and for a person’s brain to work it out they must know the answer in their brains already, and that means someone has put all the answers in here after they had it in their brains, so when I asked for the answers it remembered them?”

Little Blog’s eye on the iPhone July 11, 2007

Today we introduce an occasional service from Little Blog, in which she provides logical definitions for illogical terminology, brand names and concepts. Her big sister, Sunshine, will collaborate, to add her years of wisdom.

In honour of the frenzy around the launch of the iPhone and rumours of a nano-phone, Little Blog’s Little Definitions of the Week follow the Apple theme:

iPhone – “Its a phone with an eye on it.”
Nano – “It’s something like a marshmallow.”
Apple Mac – “That’s easy – a boy called Mac who likes eating apples.”
WiFi – “It’s a restaurant where people go and eat all kinds of foods.”
MP3 – “A kind of a computer.”
3G – “Another kind of a computer.”

Sunshine, being all of 9, is able to apply the better-known definitions to almost all of these, but offers one gem of wishful thinking:
